Flounder

Flounder are a delicious table fish and also great fun to catch as they strike at baits and lures with surprising savagery.

Physical Description: Flounder have thin and flattened disc-like bodies with both eyes facing upwards. They are brownish in colour with irregular blotches and rings. They are capable of changing colour to suit their environment.

Size: Flounder usually weigh in at about 1kg.

Habitat: Flounder can be found in shallow water over sand and mud in estuaries, in white water off beaches, in bays, in sandy shellgrit bottoms inshore and in oceanic waters up to 70m in depth. They cluster on the bottom under strong eddies created by obstructions.

Hint! Find and follow their trails (slight depressions in the mud).

How to Catch:
Bait - Try baits of prawns, worms and fish flesh.
Rod and Reel - Use a light rod either drifting or at anchor.
Line and Tackle - Opt for a 2-4kg line and a running sinker heavy enough to keep the bait on the bottom. Use No. 8 - 2 longshank hooks, depending on the type of bait.

Hot Spots:
Flounder occupy waters from Queensland to Western Australia, excluding Tasmania.
