NANNYGAI a.k.a. Nanny, Redfish

Nannygai are a sought after table fish that are relatively easy to catch as they swim in large schools. Nannygai also makes a great bait for larger fish such as Yellowfin Tuna.

Physical Description: Nannygai have large mouths, deep, short bodies and large eyes. They are predominantly red, fading on the lower body. They have sharp spines.

Size: Nannygai grow to between 160-600gm and 28-35cm.

Habitat: Nannygai are predominantly reef fish that occupy offshore rocky reefs adjacent to deep water. They often congregate near the edges of reefs that are washed by the current.

Hint! The best times to fish for Nannygai are at tide changes, especially at dawn and dusk.

How to Catch:
Bait - Nannygai can be caught on prawns, small pieces of fish and squid. They will basically take any bait when they are on the bite.
Rod and Reel - Try using a handline, simple rod and reel or deep sea winch.
Line and Tackle - Use hooks 1/0 to 3/0 and sinkers heavy enough to get to the bottom fast. A multi-hook bait jig should work quite well.

Hot Spots: Nannygai occupy offshore waters of northern New South Wales, down to south-east Victoria and north-east Tasmania.
